How we handle your data

This is a working draft, not final legal text. Everything below describes how NextNorth actually works today, to the best of our knowledge — it has not been reviewed by a lawyer. Treat it as an honest starting point, not a document to rely on for legal purposes.

1. Information we collect

• Account info — your name, email, and profile picture when you sign in with Google (or, where offered, Microsoft or LinkedIn).
• Captured entries — the voice and text captures you record, and the stories generated from them.
• Connected accounts you opt into — Google Calendar or Outlook/Microsoft Calendar (read-only, used only to time capture reminders), an ICS calendar feed URL, or your LinkedIn profile.
• Usage data — basic product analytics, covered in full under "Analytics & local storage" below.

2. How we use your information

• To provide the product — capturing entries, structuring them into stories, building your timeline, sending reminders, and generating exports.
• To understand how NextNorth is used, so we can improve it.
• To communicate with you about your account, such as reminders you've turned on.

3. How AI processing works

When you capture something, the text is sent via API to a third-party AI provider — currently one of Anthropic, Google Gemini, DeepSeek, Perplexity, or OpenAI, chosen automatically — to structure it into a story. That processing happens only to generate your result. We don't use your captured content to train AI models, and API access of this kind is not used by these providers to train their models either, under their standard API terms.

4. Where your data lives

Your captured stories and exports are stored in your own Google Drive, in a private NextNorth app folder — not on a shared NextNorth server. Your account, timeline, and preferences are stored in NextNorth's Firebase (Google Cloud) infrastructure. Sensitive activity-log fields are encrypted at rest.

5. Analytics & local storage

We use Firebase Analytics (built on Google Analytics) to understand how NextNorth is used — things like page views and key actions such as signing up, capturing an entry, or connecting a calendar. We don't use tracking cookies. The app does store a few things in your browser's local storage — such as your Google Drive connection and whether you've completed onboarding — so you don't have to reconnect every time. These marketing pages, including this one, don't run analytics or set anything of their own.

6. Third-party services

• Firebase (Google) — authentication, database, functions, hosting, push notifications, and analytics.
• Google Drive — where your captured stories and exports are stored.
• Google Calendar / Outlook Calendar — optional, read-only, used only to time capture reminders.
• LinkedIn — optional, if you connect it, to bring in profile info.
• AI providers — process your captures to structure them into stories, as described above.

7. Your data, your control

• Export your stories to Google Docs at any time.
• Delete your data at any time — this removes your captured stories and account data from NextNorth, and your NextNorth folder from Google Drive.
• Disconnect any connected account (Google Calendar, Outlook, LinkedIn) at any time.
• Deleting your NextNorth data doesn't affect your underlying Google, Microsoft, or LinkedIn account — those stay under your control separately.

8. Children's privacy

NextNorth is built for working professionals and isn't directed at children. We don't knowingly collect information from children.

9. Changes to this policy

As NextNorth changes, this page may change with it. We'll update the date at the top when it does.
